Good news. I went to the Chinese Embassy this morning, and after filling in the form and dropping off my passport, returned in the afternoon to collect it again.
It now includes a six month, multiple entry visa to China. I can't stay for longer than 30 days at a time - but that's not a problem, as it means I can go to Hong Kong, think about going to Mongolia, or take a trip on the Karakoram Highway without having to worry about the visa situation.
From what I've read, this is not the easiest type of visa to get - and it's opened up a whole lot of opportunties...which is great news.
