Cordoba and New Year...

New Year`s 2009 - a real night to remember - had a great time. So here`s what happened:

The bus ride to Cordoba was a breeze after the buses in Bolivia. The seats are like big arm chairs that recline (called Cocha Cama here), and mean you can get some sleep. They even serve food and drinks.

Here´s an example of one of the seats:

Cordoba is Argentina`s second biggest city, and houses somewhere in the region of seven university's. So expecting there to be a massive party, it came as a surprise that just about every tourist attraction was either closed or being refurbished. Which included one rather amusing museum, where they said (when asked) that they opened every Wednesday. When asked why they were closed even though it was Wednesday, the answer was that it was every Wednesday except this one :-)

It also turns out that the students all head off to Barlioche in the south of Argentine, so it was pretty quiet.

Not to worry. There were quite a few people (somewhere in the region of 30) in the bar at the hostal (Cordoba Backpackers - highly recommended), and so everyone hung out playing pool and chatting. There were people from all over the world including: Argentina, Uruguay, Oz, Canada, Britain, Ireland, Norway, Iceland...

At midnight, we all headed up to the roof terrace to watch the fireworks. And then at some time which I fail to recall, we all headed out to a club - here things don`t even get started until 3.30am. Got back in at just after 7am and decided to stay up as I couldn´t be bothered going to bed.

Had a great time.

I`d planned to stay another day, but decided to leave that night as there wasn`t much to do. Had a great lunch and then dinner with Hilary, Ronan and Audrey (from Ireland), Kathryn from France, and girl from Switzerland. After saying good bye I headed off to catch the bus to Resistencia.

So that`s Cordoba. Not much else to say except here are some pics of Cordoba. There aren`t any of the party, as I met four different people who`d been robbed that day (anything from phone`s to money), so locked it safely away:

This is one of the main street´s - just like Rome:

This church was built with only one spire to remind us of humanities imperfection:

And what it looks like on the inside (a bit like Christchurch (NZ) Cathedral):

Here`s one of a memorial of the people who disappeared (known as "The Disappeared) from Cordoba during The Dirty War (1976 to 1983):

Sorry - not many pics (but plenty of memories). Most stuff was closed as it was New Year`s.

oh! So tell me, have you been robbed too?? It's horrible. Many people here walk with afraid. Me too. Argentina had a serious problem with robbers. And the most fear of tourist people is the "security" of my country. I'm afraid to going out at night :(!!
But, I dunno... have you enjoyed to stay in my city? Hope yes ^^

Please, take care and good luck in your travel!!
